Newsrooms in the Philippines Urged to Address Ethics and Accountability before Implementing AI Policies

Newsrooms in the Philippines need to prioritize ethics and accountability before implementing policies on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP). In a statement, NUJP emphasized the importance of discussing and developing AI policies that assist journalists rather than replace them. They called on newsroom managers and staff to engage in these conversations and ensure that ethical and accountability issues are addressed before implementing AI policies.

Poynter, a US-based journalism think tank, stated in April that newsrooms should establish new standards and disclosures to maintain trust with news consumers and ensure accountability in the age of AI. Online media company Rappler has already issued guidelines on artificial intelligence, emphasizing the significance of human critical thinking and judgment while exploring the utilization of AI.

NUJP highlighted that the introduction of AI sportscasters raises concerns about job security in the media industry, especially in light of stagnant pay, layoffs, and departures. They emphasized the need for media workers to be reskilled to adapt to industry changes and expressed hope that GMA News has plans for this in addition to their announcement of AI news presenters.

GMA Network, on the other hand, stated that the adoption of AI technology reflects their commitment to innovation in journalism and their mission to promote inclusivity in reporting. However, this decision drew criticism on social media.

NUJP concluded their statement by emphasizing the unique abilities of human journalists to listen to the communities they serve, learn from them, and amplify their stories. They encouraged newsrooms to prioritize human connection and engagement even as AI technology is integrated into the field of journalism.
