Since the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), its impact on healthcare in Serbia has been continuously expanding. Novel technologies are reshaping care methodologies and practices in various fields of medicine. One such field that has witnessed rapid advancement is radiology, which utilizes imaging technology for the treatment of diseases. We spoke with several radiologists in Serbia to understand how AI is transforming their practice.
In recent years, AI has revolutionized computer vision for image interpretation. However, radiology professor and practicing interventional radiologist Sophie Chheang emphasizes that AI has vast potential beyond just image interpretation. Apart from diagnosis, AI can be utilized in aspects such as billing, scheduling, reporting, education, and communication within radiology.
Contrary to popular belief, radiologists in Serbia are not afraid of AI replacing them. Instead, they are actively exploring ways to incorporate AI into their day-to-day workflow to enhance efficiency. Given the shortage of radiology specialists and the increasing number of imaging studies, AI has the potential to alleviate physician burnout by streamlining their work and providing them with more time for critical tasks.
