Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being utilized in various fields of scientific research, and now scientists are focusing their attention on predicting natural disasters such as massive hurricanes, wildfires, and coastal flooding. Professor Ben Kirtman from the University of Michigan is leading an AI project supported by three new federal grants totaling over $3 million.
Kirtman and his team plan to use AI as one of the tools to enhance predictive analytics in the field of climate change. The goal of the research is to improve computer models to better reflect the physics that operate in the planetary climate system. One of the focused projects is predicting coastal floods in places like Key Biscayne, with the aim of providing long-term forecasts that go beyond just predicting storm surges and coastal impacts brought by hurricanes.
By 2050, the frequency of floods is expected to more than triple, reaching a national average of at least 85 flood days per year, according to NOAA data. The Northeast, Southeast, and Gulf Coast have experienced the greatest increase in flooding due to high tides. Kirtman wants to more accurately predict such events and see his research transforming weather forecasts.
In addition, scientists will also study predicting forest fires to enable proactive first response actions instead of reactive ones. Forest fire incidents in the United States are on the rise. Between 2011 and 2020, an average of about 7.5 million hectares burned each year. That is twice as much as the ten-year average of 2.7 million hectares between 1983 and 1992.
Furthermore, the research will focus on the El Niño phenomenon. The goal is to improve the prediction of the intensity of El Niño events and better understand its impact on weather and the migration of marine life. Currently, there are several global climate models, and Kirtman plans to apply machine learning, specifically AI, to create a better forecast.
