As the threat of artificial intelligence (AI) taking over jobs continues to grow, employees are securing the future of their careers by specifically applying for job ads that mention AI – because if you can’t beat AI, it’s better to join.
This is according to a study by LinkedIn, which shows that job ads on the platform that mention AI or Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) have seen a 17% higher growth in applications compared to ads that don’t mention AI.
“Candidates are resourceful,” said Erin Skrags, Vice President of Global Talent at LinkedIn. “They show that they want to go where the opportunities are.”
As a result, she recommends that companies include detailed descriptions of their AI plans in their job ads, even if the advertised role is not directly involved in those plans, to avoid losing top talent.
“I would consider it a requirement for most companies to at least share the basic plan of their AI strategy in job ads to stay ahead of the market,” Skrags added.
Furthermore, companies worldwide should take note: LinkedIn’s conclusion that AI-related job ads are in demand was based on data from ads written in English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, German, Portuguese, Turkish, and Chinese.
Join the Artificial Intelligence Train – or Risk Being Replaced
The race to join the artificial intelligence train comes as fears grow that automation will wipe out millions of jobs. Last week, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said at an AI safety summit in the United Kingdom that AI will eventually eliminate employment.
“You can have a job if you want for personal satisfaction. But AI could do everything,” Musk told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “I don’t know if people will feel comfortable or not about that.”
At the same time, investment bank Goldman Sachs estimates that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs worldwide in the coming years. On the other hand, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna predicts that “repetitive white-collar jobs” will be the first to be automated.
But he added that doesn’t mean people will be left without jobs. “People confuse productivity with job loss,” he said at a Fortune conference for the CEO Initiative.
As an example, he cited the jobs created by the invention of the internet. “In 1995, nobody believed there would be five million web designers – and now there are,” Krishna said.
That’s why former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong advised employees who are concerned about being replaced by AI to secure the future of their positions by transitioning into the industry, as it doesn’t require “enormous technical skills.”
“Non-tech people can create very valuable and novel applications related to AI,” he told Fortune. “There is a huge potential that an individual can fulfill.”
Similarly, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently suggested that AI will “create jobs” – noting that while people may not lose their jobs because of AI, they will likely lose them to another person who uses AI.
This is one thing leaders seem to agree on – and according to LinkedIn’s research, workers are aware of it too.
“AI may not replace managers, but managers who use AI will replace managers who don’t,” said Rob Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer at IBM, during a press conference. “It truly changes the way people work.” Similarly, economist Richard Baldwin reiterated during a panel at the World Economic Forum’s Growth Summit in 2023: “AI won’t take your job. It will be someone who uses AI.”
