Introducing artificial intelligence (AI) on a wide scale has caused disruptions in every industry, altering the way we live, work, and even learn. In the field of education, it has rendered traditional teachers “shocked like the Gutenberg printing press”, as many of their skills became practically obsolete overnight. The rapid rise of AI has raised concerns about risks such as plagiarism and diminished student engagement, leading many educational institutions to limit or even ban the use of technology in classrooms.
Despite potential risks, I believe there are far more opportunities for the betterment of humanity than harm. If technology is used properly and responsibly, AI has the potential to exponentially support and enhance student learning, just as printed books, calculators, or computers did for previous generations.
The question is not whether we should use AI, but how we should utilize it. It is clear that technology needs to have certain frameworks. Officials, business leaders, and even prominent personalities like Tom Hanks have joined the debate on AI regulation. However, global leaders have been slow to react, with efforts largely limited to national and regional spheres.
Why is there hesitancy and emphasis on local perspectives? Even during the height of the Cold War, opposing factions sought international consensus, particularly regarding ethical norms or ‘red lines’ concerning the use of nuclear weapons. Some theories suggest that this caution towards regulating AI largely stems from a lack of understanding of the technology and its consequences.
Why not engage the generation that seamlessly integrates AI into their daily routines? They not only have opinions on the matter but can also provide a broader and deeper insight into the ethics of technology. A group of international students aged 13 to 18 from the Institut auf dem Rosenberg took the initiative and developed the “AI Code of Ethics,” consisting of 13 points, urging world leaders to promptly regulate the development and use of AI through an international agreement and regulatory agency.
Some of the suggested frameworks proposed by the students as the basis for a global agreement include:
– Input and output control: All organizations, whether private or governmental, involved in designing, engineering, and/or distributing AI products, must clearly be held accountable for information generated using AI. These organizations need to establish specialized departments that combine human supervision and machine learning-based automated technologies to ensure responsible AI usage. An external, impartial global body must rigorously oversee and ensure strict adherence to the proper use of AI, granting exclusive approvals for safe AI usage only to those organizations that conscientiously adhere to AI standards.
– Transparent source tracking: Full transparency in identifying entities responsible for AI processes is imperative. Therefore, all information processed through AI must be traceable transparently to its origin, specifically attributing it to the entities processing the information using AI. Users must have unrestricted access to all original input data used by AI systems. Violation of source tracking obligations will face decisive legal measures.
– Deepfake regulation: For all deepfake or artificially generated content, mandatory watermarking or detected patterns are recommended. We advocate for increased investment in technology for detecting deepfake content. Unethical usage of deepfakes, including defamation and identity theft, must be unconditionally punishable. AI systems must diligently maintain a history of interactions, and AI software developers must be legally accountable for verifying the origin of disseminated information.
– Prevention of monopolies and duopolies: In order to achieve fair development and access to AI, signatory parties solemnly commit to actively advocate for diversity and resist monopolies, duopolies, or oligopolies in the field of AI creativity. This commitment aims to stimulate innovation, fairness, and global collaboration.
– Support for cultural and academic endeavors: AI programs should be designed solely to support cultural and academic creators, refraining from autonomously generating cultural and academic content.
