Over the years, sophisticated telescopes have discovered thousands of concentric rings encircling Saturn, as well as enigmatic dark shadows that intermittently appear and vanish around the planet.

In recent decades, the Hubble Space Telescope has continued to monitor these dark shadows, which are believed to be dust particles electrostatically levitated above the rings. What is intriguing is that the number of shadows changes within a seven-year cycle of Saturn’s rotation, which could be linked to its magnetic field and axial tilt.

This transient phenomenon, known as “spokes,” rotates along with the rings and can be observed for two to three rotations. The Hubble telescope regularly tracks this occurrence and records the changes that happen every year.

This year, shadows have emerged on both sides of the planet and are rotating around it. While they are small compared to Saturn, these shadows are wider than the Earth.
