The Arrival of Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace: Expectations, Challenges, and Benefits

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already transforming the workplace – from how jobs function to how work is performed. What’s even more astonishing is the rapid pace of change, with over 90% of employers predicting that they will be using AI-related solutions in their organizations by 2028. In order to better understand where jobs may be heading in the future, Access Partnership and Amazon Web Services (AWS) collaborated on a new study involving 3,297 employees and 1,340 organizations across various industries in the United States. Here are five key findings from this research.

1. Majority of organizations will utilize AI and expect its benefits

Nearly all organizations in the US will have the capability to use AI. According to the report, 92% of participating organizations plan to leverage AI-powered solutions by 2028. While most employers (92%) believe that their IT departments will be the biggest beneficiaries of AI, they also anticipate significant value for other departments, ranging from sales and marketing (85%) to human resources (78%). The majority sees the benefits of AI in providing significant advantages to their organizations, such as automating employee tasks (64%), improving workflows and outcomes (58%), enhancing communication (54%), and helping employees acquire new skills (50%).

2. Tools with generative AI are becoming commonplace in the workplace

Generative AI – a type of AI that can quickly create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos, music, and more – has gained attention from a wider audience in the past year. Given this trend, it is not surprising that over 93% of employers and 86% of employees expect to use generative AI in the next five years to boost innovation and creativity, automate repetitive tasks, and enhance learning.

3. Acquiring AI skills can increase salaries and accelerate career growth

Considering the significant potential for improving operational efficiency, worker productivity, and decision-making, employers in the study have shown a willingness to pay higher wages to employees with AI skills and expertise. Interestingly, employers stated that they are willing to pay IT workers with AI skills a noticeably higher salary by 47%, with compensation for AI skills extending to other departments as well. Employers expressed their readiness to provide a premium in sales and marketing (43% higher) to employees with AI skills.
