SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which previously successfully sent NASA astronauts Bob Benken and Douglas Harley on the first private flight to the International Space Station, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean last night while returning to Earth. It plunged into the ocean after completing a record-breaking 19 space missions for billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s company – SpaceX.

The Falcon 9 program, as it is called, is perhaps one of the most successful in the history of spacecraft or rockets. These rockets are the first of their kind in the world, capable of lifting heavy payloads into space and performing vertical landings using their engines. At the same time, since each rocket can be reused more than ten times, the marginal costs for the company and its clients to launch cargo into space are also drastically reduced compared to the case where SpaceX would have to create new systems for each new launch.

Today’s rocket, or more precisely, the Falcon 9 booster, which is now expected to rest at the bottom of the ocean, was special because it was first launched in May 2020 when SpaceX conducted its first crewed demonstration mission in NASA’s commercial space program.

Although this rocket achieved a company record, there are three others that have successfully completed 17 missions each. The company deemed the unplanned Falcon 9 mission as an accident. Mechanical design changes will be implemented to avoid similar incidents in the future.
