In a recent report by Nikkei Asia, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), a Chinese semiconductor manufacturer, is actively working on the development of post-7nm chip technologies, including 5nm and even 3nm. Despite facing sanctions from the United States, which have limited SMIC’s access to advanced chip production equipment, the company continues to make progress.

Led by co-CEO Liang Mong-Song, who is recognized as one of the top scientists and leaders in the global semiconductor industry, SMIC is pushing forward with its research and development of new manufacturing technologies. While the company does not have access to the most advanced equipment, such as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, SMIC has been able to make advancements using older production tools like deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. The second generation of the 7nm production process has already been achieved using DUV machines.

To achieve progress in the 5nm and 3nm chip technologies without the use of EUV machines, SMIC will rely on multiple patterning and the expertise of its team of experts. Although this method is complex and can impact production cycle time, chip yield, and costs, SMIC believes that under Mong-Song’s leadership, they are capable of achieving this goal.
