Smartphone production has seen a strong recovery in the second half of 2023, becoming one of the main drivers of economic growth during this period. With decreasing inventories in sales channels and increased seasonal demand, global smartphone production reached an impressive 308 million units in the third quarter, representing a 13% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 6.4% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth has halted the trend of annual declines that lasted for eight years.

Manufacturers of smartphones anticipate further growth in the fourth quarter, thanks to promotions in online stores and additional demand generated by holiday shopping. Brands also plan to increase production to meet the heightened demand towards the end of the year. According to TrendForce’s analysis, smartphone production is expected to increase by 5-10% compared to the previous quarter in the fourth quarter. However, the overall global smartphone production in 2023 is forecasted to decline by less than 3%, with a total output of around 1.16 billion units.

Leading manufacturers such as Samsung and Apple have experienced significant production growth during the third quarter. Samsung has maintained its market-leading position, while Apple has benefited from the launch of its new flagship models. However, Huawei’s comeback in the market poses a challenge to Apple’s market share in China in the coming year.
