In a recent public appearance, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, discussed the challenges the company has faced in the past year. Despite a turbulent period, Altman remains committed to advancing the products of OpenAI and acknowledges the pressure and negativity that come with leading the company towards its goals.
During the Hope Global Forum in Atlanta on December 11th, Altman spoke with John Hope Bryant, the founder and CEO of Operation Hope. This was Altman’s first public appearance since his surprising dismissal and subsequent rehiring as the head of ChatGPT. Altman humorously admitted feeling a bit exhausted but expressed his determination to move forward.
Altman emphasized that OpenAI’s goal is to listen to its users and the wider community to address concerns about the potential misuse of the technology and its impact on humanity. He acknowledged the anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence and shared his own understanding of those fears. Altman recognized the need for someone to project those fears onto, and that for a while, he would be that person.
Altman also acknowledged the impact the launch of ChatGPT had on OpenAI’s 770 employees, many of whom signed an open letter threatening to leave if Altman were permanently dismissed. Altman confessed that the response was unexpected and that the situation had escalated beyond their initial expectations.
The “tornado” of OpenAI included acquiring 100 million users within two months of launch and witnessing the emergence of competitors launching their own language models. Altman found himself in the center of attention, traveling to 22 countries, meeting world leaders, and becoming the face of OpenAI across global media.
“We had to achieve what most companies take five or ten years to do, and we did it in six months,” Altman exclaimed. The experience was both enjoyable and challenging, filled with blessings and pain.
