According to Professor Max Tegmark from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the future of humanity is at risk due to the unrestrained development of artificial intelligence (AI) by several technology companies. Tegmark, along with thousands of figures from the tech industry, including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, have issued an open letter calling for a “race to the top” in AI development and a six-month pause in AI experiments.
“Urgent safety standards for AI are crucial to turn this race into a race to the top,” Tegmark stated in an interview with The Guardian. “While AI offers tremendous benefits, the uncontrolled development of increasingly powerful systems without oversight puts our economy, society, and lives in danger. Regulation is key to ensuring safe innovation so that a few AI companies do not jeopardize our common future.”
A recently published document by 23 AI experts, including renowned researchers Guillaume Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, argues that governments should have the authority to halt the development of highly powerful AI models. Gillian Hadfield, co-author of the document and director of the Institute for Technology and Society at the University of Toronto, emphasized that within the next 18 months, significantly more powerful models will be developed, capable of bypassing human control.
The document asserts that extremely capable future models, which could potentially circumvent human control, must require governmental permits and, if necessary, their development must be halted. The concerns surrounding artificial general intelligence (AGI), the term for a system capable of performing a wide range of tasks at or above human intelligence levels, are central to those advocating for stricter regulation of AI.
Key players in the technology industry, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Facebook, are heavily investing in AI research and development. Regulation and responsible development of this technology are becoming increasingly important to ensure the safety and preservation of humanity’s future.
