Qualcomm najavljuje Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 čipset za VR i MR naočare

Qualcomm, the American chip designer, has announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset as an upgrade to the standard XR2 Gen 2 chip, which was introduced in September 2023. This new version of the chipset will be officially unveiled at the upcoming CES 2024 tech show. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is designed for VR and MR glasses, as well as other wearable devices.

The main upgrade of the new chipset is its support for a 4.3K resolution per “eye” on the glasses, compared to the previous version which had 3K. In addition, Qualcomm announces that the new chip will be capable of integrating up to 12 cameras simultaneously for body tracking and Passthrough function. This function allows users to see their surroundings in real time while using the VR device.

Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 also brings improvements in raw power, with a 20% increase in CPU speed and a 15% increase in GPU speed compared to the previous chip. This chipset can process content at up to 90 fps, and all these features are integrated into a single chip to save space, which is a challenge in most VR glasses.

Although Qualcomm has not announced specific devices that will use the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, the company has stated that it is collaborating with Samsung and Google on something that will include this chipset. This upgrade is expected to enable more powerful standalone VR glasses in the near future.
