The popular gaming company, Rockstar Games, is facing significant security challenges after the source code of their game, Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), along with other confidential materials, leaked onto the internet. This incident marks the second leak related to the fifth installment of this popular franchise, creating concerns about the security of GTA Online and the future of the franchise.
The information about the code leak was published on the GTA Focal profile on the social media platform, X, confirming that the files were leaked after being shared among individuals. The leaked file, which is approximately 4GB in size, primarily contains code, but the complete version of the source code has not yet been detected.
The consequence of this leak is a serious concern for the security of GTA Online, as hackers now have the potential to identify vulnerabilities in the source code and exploit them to execute code on players’ systems. This could lead to significant problems for GTA Online players, creating a “high-risk zone” for them.
Furthermore, the leak has not only revealed the source code of GTA V, but also files from the long-awaited game, Bully 2, which was never realized, as well as parts of the code for GTA 6. Several unreleased DLCs have been discovered, including a character named Trevor from GTA 5, who has already appeared in previous leaks. The leak even uncovered a map from a canceled project codenamed “Agent,” which was likely inspired by the James Bond franchise.
This incident is occurring at a time when many developers are on holiday, exacerbating the situation for Rockstar Games and its development teams. They are now faced with the challenge of removing existing online connections to the game’s source code and ensuring the security of future games in the GTA franchise.
