Ingenuity, a small helicopter, made its arrival on Mars in February 2021 alongside the Perseverance rover. Initially planned for just five short experimental flights, the helicopter surprised NASA experts with its extraordinary achievements.

Instead of just five flights, Ingenuity successfully completed a total of 72 flights by mid-January of this year. Each flight was a valuable opportunity as the helicopter exceeded its planned coverage area by a staggering 14 times through its observational and exploratory missions.

Unfortunately, during its last flight on January 18, contact with Ingenuity was lost following a forced landing on the Martian surface. NASA experts were concerned, but contact with the small helicopter was reestablished the very next day.

Upon analyzing the photographs captured by Ingenuity, significant physical damage was observed. This finding was difficult for the NASA team to accept, but they also emphasized the immense success of this space mission.

Lori Glaze, one of the directors at NASA, said, “While we knew the helicopter would eventually cease to function, it is not easy to acknowledge that this mission is now concluded.” She also highlighted how the small helicopter surpassed all scientists’ expectations during its multi-year operation on Mars.

Ingenuity will forever be remembered as the first aircraft to successfully fly on another planet, contributing new knowledge and inspiring further exploration of space.
