New AI-Powered Apps Transforming the Digital Landscape in 2023

Last week, Apple and Google unveiled their lists of the best apps for 2023, featuring a range of AI-powered applications. While Apple did not include any of these apps on their main list, they created a separate list highlighting generative apps with AI capabilities, such as ChatGPT, Canva, and Picsart. Other notable apps, including Pinterest, Craft, Artifact, and Sololearn, also stood out with their AI integrations.

According to Apple, “Apps reflect the culture, and in 2023, generative AI captured the collective imagination of users with its real-time advancements.” Throughout the year, applications incorporated AI in various ways. Though many features are still in their early stages, these apps allowed users to witness the technology in action and draw their own conclusions about its benefits and risks.

Turning to Google’s list, the chatbot app Character AI, utilizing AI, was named “Best AI App,” while ChatGPT, a major competitor to Google, received special recognition. However, ChatGPT emerged as the most popular app in the “Users’ Choice” category.

ChatGPT made its debut in May but celebrated a significant milestone last week, marking one year since OpenAI introduced the web version on November 30, 2022. However, Apple’s list also acknowledges that apps like ChatGPT are not flawless, noting the tendency of large language models to “hallucinate” and produce “offensive or socially insensitive responses.”

Numerous other generative apps with AI support entered the market this year, including chatbots like Claude by Anthropic, Pi by Inflection AI, and Poe by Quora. On the other hand, some apps focused on generative video tools, like Runway AI. However, some are still exclusively available on Discord, such as the VI-based image generator Midjourney and Pika, a newly released startup specializing in AI-powered video editing. Apple’s annual list also includes finalists like the video editing app DaVinci Resolve. Another notable app is Duolingo, which implemented several new features based on OpenAI’s language models powering ChatGPT in its language learning program this year.

“We’ve made much more progress with this technology over the past year than I anticipated,” said Clinton Bicknell, Head of AI at Duolingo. “It’s now being used throughout the company. We’re using it not only for many of these real-time features we’re talking about, but also for many behind-the-scenes functions to generate things at scale for all our free users.”

According to data provided by data.ai (formerly App Annie), several other popular apps that added AI-based features experienced growth in 2023. Google saw a 44% increase in downloads in the first three quarters of 2023, from 79.2 million to 114 million. Microsoft Edge downloads nearly doubled, from 20 million to 39.9 million, while Bing downloads skyrocketed by 2,340%, from 1.5 million to 36.6 million. Other apps that added new AI-based features and recorded download growth include Expedia, Shopify, and Chegg. However, some other apps with AI functionalities experienced declines, such as Snapchat (-10%), Slack (-8%), and Instacart (-3%).

When data.ai analyzed the list of most popular generative AI-based apps for iOS and Android, ChatGPT recorded the highest number of downloads worldwide, with 112.4 million, including 19.5 million in the US. Other generative AI-based apps with significant downloads in the US this year included chatbots like Ask AI (9.8 million) and Character AI (8.7 million), as well as the Wonder AI Art Generator, an AI-driven art generator (6.2 million).
