After nearly three years on Mars, the NASA Ingenuity helicopter has officially completed its mission, the space agency announced. The aircraft, which arrived on the Red Planet aboard the Perseverance rover, successfully completed 72 flights, flying almost 14 times farther than originally planned.

Ingenuity’s mission on Mars lasted nearly 1,000 days, which is 33 times longer than the planned duration. The initial intention was to prove that flight is possible in the thin atmosphere of Mars, but the helicopter continued to work as an external scout for the Perseverance rover.

The resilience of the Ingenuity helicopter surpassed expectations. The helicopter relied on a solar-powered heating system to protect it during the harsh, cold nights on Mars. However, during landing, the rotor blades were damaged, rendering further flights impossible.

“With a heavy heart, I have to announce that Ingenuity, the little helicopter, has completed its final flight on Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson in a video message. “Like the Wright brothers, who paved the way here on Earth at the beginning of the last century, Ingenuity has charted a path for future flights in our solar system and is leading the way to smarter, safer human missions to Mars and beyond.”

Now, the Ingenuity team will conduct final tests on the helicopter systems and retrieve remaining images and data from its memory. This successful mission of the helicopter on Mars opens doors to future explorations and research missions on other planets.
