Google Introduces New Guidelines for Android Apps Using Generative AI

Google has announced new guidelines that will require apps utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) to include a button for reporting offensive content. This new guideline will come into effect at the beginning of next year, and any apps failing to comply will not be accepted in the Google Play Store.

Users will now have the ability to report offensive content directly from within the app, eliminating the need to navigate to other platforms. This is a similar reporting system to those already in place for many apps today. As per Google’s guidelines, examples of problematic generative AI content include explicit sexual invoices, deceptive videos, fake election content, and generative AI apps primarily designed to be sexually gratifying.

In addition to the new guidelines for generative AI content, Google will also be tightening its permissions policy for photos and videos in the Play Store. Only apps requiring broad access to photos and videos will be granted general permissions, while apps with limited use of media files will have to rely on photo pickers.

Google has acknowledged that generative AI is a rapidly evolving category of apps and has stated its intention to review its AI-related policies as technology progresses.
