Artificial intelligence (A.I.) has rapidly infiltrated various aspects of our lives, including the realm of arts. As an artist, I have been intrigued by the possibilities and challenges posed by this intersection. In the year 2023, we witnessed the emergence of A.I.-driven creativity, with its exhilarating potential and thought-provoking implications. However, as we step into the year 2024, it is crucial to delve deeper into how technology can coexist harmoniously with art.
Technology has undeniably become an inseparable part of my artistic process. As a composer, I utilize digital tools to shape and refine my compositions, allowing me to experiment and collaborate in unprecedented ways. The ability to generate intricate film scores electronically before finalizing them with live musicians has revolutionized my approach to music creation. Moreover, as a music and film aficionado, the vast reservoir of knowledge available online has expanded the horizons of my creativity.
In the pursuit of exploring the potential of technology in art, I ventured into the realm of ChatGPT—an innovative A.I. tool. Following its recent release, I was captivated by its ability to introduce me to new classical compositions inspired by the ocean and uncover the influences behind celebrated directors. However, there were moments of unease that urged me to critically examine the role of A.I. in artistic endeavors.
While using ChatGPT, I stumbled upon instances that raised questions about its trustworthiness. When I sought a list of notable black composers, the results predominantly featured names of white composers, casting doubts on the reliability of the tool. Similarly, when I requested it to write in the style of a specific author, I detected a disconcertingly familiar tone, despite the presence of peculiar phrasing typically associated with A.I.-generated content.
Yet, upon reflection, my perspective evolved, assimilating insights gained from my experiences as a composer for documentaries. Studying the medium led me to contemplate the concept of “truth” in cinema. In cinéma vérité, where observational filming plays a pivotal role, the choices made by filmmakers inevitably introduce subjective biases into the creative process. This parallel reminded me of the art of jazz improvisation, where musicians draw from their personal life experiences to create something novel while retaining their distinct musical voices.
Similarly, A.I. algorithms such as ChatGPT draw from a diverse range of sources to inform their creative output. However, they are unable to completely eradicate the biases inherited from their data sources. Just as every jazz musician possesses a unique musical identity, artists working in cinéma vérité bring their own perspectives to the creative process. To ensure a balanced integration of technology in the arts, we must adopt a skeptical mindset. Rather than fearing the influence of A.I., we should regard it as another tool at our disposal.
