In a recent announcement, computer brand SK Hynix has revealed the possibility of implementing CAMM memory modules, originally designed for laptops, in desktop computers. While this information has been confirmed by company representatives at the CES 2024 trade show, the details of the implementation are still unknown.

CAMM, also known as Compression Attached Memory Module, is an innovative memory standard that was developed by Dell in 2022. It has recently received certification as the official replacement for SO-DIMM memory modules in laptops. However, the transition to desktop computers could have a significant impact on the desktop memory market, as CAMM modules require horizontal fastening with screws, unlike the currently used vertical DRAM modules.

The implementation of CAMM memory modules in desktop computers will require the reconstruction of the motherboard layout, which could disrupt the current design of desktop memory. Additionally, the slim and flat CAMM modules may limit the number of modules that can be installed on a standard ATX motherboard.
