Dawn of Responsible Artificial Intelligence: Pentagon’s Revolutionary App

In a groundbreaking move, the Pentagon has recently unveiled an application aimed at preventing the accidental construction of SkyNet, as seen in the Terminator movies. This revolutionary app is part of the Department of Defense’s ongoing efforts to ensure the ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in military operations.

Three years ago, the Department of Defense adopted five broad principles for the ethical use of AI in military purposes. These principles include eliminating algorithmic bias in training and incorporating kill switches to prevent unforeseen AI situations. Building upon these principles, the Pentagon’s Office of the Chief Data Officer (CDAO) developed a comprehensive plan for the implementation of “responsible AI” last year. This plan provides guidance for military officials on how to apply these principles to their specific programming projects.

“Having this application is incredibly beneficial for our industry partners and the general public, as it provides clear insight into the Department’s approach towards AI ethics,” said Michael K. Johnson, the head of the Responsible AI team. He further announced that the application will soon be available to the wider public and accessible online. While the officials didn’t provide an exact release date, they assured that it will be coming “very, very soon.”

One of the key aspects of this app is its global accessibility. It will be available to users beyond the United States, as part of the Pentagon’s strategy to integrate and collaborate with foreign partners. Moreover, the Pentagon aims to promote understanding, transparency, and cooperation between U.S. officials, military contractors, and foreign allies. The ultimate goal is to shape an ecosystem that aligns with American values of openness and privacy, countering the authoritarian vision of the Chinese Communist Party, which exploits AI as a tool for control and propaganda.

In addition to promoting the principles of responsible AI, the Pentagon team is exploring new incentives to encourage the development of technology that adheres to ethical principles. They are considering a “carrot” approach, rather than a “stick,” to motivate the industry. Sponsorship of projects in line with ethical AI usage is one way the Department of Defense can actively encourage innovation.

This new application complements the existing “Responsible AI Plan” introduced in 2020. The plan outlines five core principles, requiring the implementation of 64 different undertakings. The app will guide users through a self-assessment process, helping them apply these principles to their specific projects.
