Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already proven its capabilities in surpassing human abilities in abstract strategic games such as chess and Go. However, physical skills have so far remained the domain of humans. Now, a robot with integrated artificial intelligence called CyberRunner has managed to outperform humans in the popular maze game.
Researchers from ETH Zurich have created an AI robot with the task of learning how to play the maze game. Using two buttons, the robot needs to guide a ball from the starting point to the endpoint, avoiding holes on the board. This game requires sharp motor skills, spatial reasoning ability, and a lot of practice.
CyberRunner is equipped with two motors, a camera, and a computer, allowing it to play the game in the same way as humans. Like humans, CyberRunner learns through experience using recent advancements in AI-based learning. While playing the game, the robot observes the maze and receives rewards based on its performance. The algorithm uses the collected experience to learn how to behave and recognize the most promising actions.
The result of CyberRunner’s training? It has set a new world record in solving the maze game, surpassing the record set by a human who has been playing the game for decades. The robot managed to complete the game in 14.48 seconds, which is six percent faster than the previous record.
Researchers noticed that the robot discovered some shortcuts and cheating methods during the learning process, indicating that artificial intelligence can develop “friendly” deceptive behavior similar to human character. To maintain fair play, researchers had to intervene and instruct the robot not to skip parts of the maze.
