Canva Unveils Magic Studio: A New Era in Design with Generative AI Technology

Canva, the popular graphic design platform, has recently introduced Magic Studio – a new package of design tools that harness the power of generative AI technology. With a focus on catering to the Indian market, Canva has tailored several features of the platform specifically for users who speak Indian languages. But is it worth paying a subscription to access these tools? Here’s what we discovered after a month of experimenting with Magic Studio functions on Canva Pro.

The Magic Transition

The Magic Transition tool does exactly what its name suggests. It helps you translate entire presentations or documents to other languages, resize projects to fit social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and transform existing text into emails, resumes, or even song lyrics. Our transformation of a simple slide in English to its Hindi version was accurate and sounded natural for a native Hindi speaker. However, the Tamil translation was coherent but sounded less natural due to the inclusion of technical terms.

The Magic Extension

This AI technology allows you to insert images into larger scenes that seamlessly blend with the original photograph. While some distortions may be noticeable upon closer inspection, the Magic Extension can salvage low-resolution images that are too small for enlargement. However, it is not recommended to use this tool for photographs of people or scenarios where image authenticity is crucial.

The Magic Media

Users who enjoy playing around with design will surely have fun with the Magic Media tool, which enables you to turn text into images or even short video clips. When we asked the system to generate photorealistic images of a person reading an Indian newspaper, The Hindu, while drinking coffee, the resulting four images appeared engaging and artistically pleasing at first glance. However, upon closer examination, we noticed distorted text that bore no resemblance to the English language, distorted or even floating fingers, and coffee cups that cheekily defied the laws of physics. The AI-generated video was also not much better, displaying mostly expressionless faces touching a cup with a newspaper.

The Magic Writing, Brand Voice

The Magic Writing feature allows you to generate text, with the system capable of continuing existing text, creating content on demand, crafting summaries, and modifying the tone to make it more formal or informal. As a result, you get standard marketing text, but nothing particularly outstanding or unique. For content creators, Canva Pro allows users to input the brand’s “voice” or distinctive writing style (humorous, professional, witty, formal, etc.) so that all brand materials maintain a consistent tone. Canva automatically blocks inappropriate or child-like brand voice patterns. This feature can also be applied to existing text to instantly align it with the brand’s style.

The Magic Display, Magic Design

The Magic Display tool assists photographers, editors, designers, and collage creators in isolating subjects or objects from photos and placing them on different backgrounds. Canva excels at extracting the main subject, whether you rely solely on the Magic Display or use the background removal tool, allowing you to drag and drop the extracted portion wherever you desire – or even animate it. The process is quick, efficient, and perfect for those who don’t want to hassle with more complex Photoshop adjustments. The rest of the image remains mostly usable, which is also a plus.

On the other hand, the Magic Design feature, which manipulates text to give it special effects, is mostly subpar and users are advised to avoid it.
