Apple has recently started compensating owners of older iPhone models for deliberately slowing down their devices. The case, known as “Batterygate,” began in 2017 when it was discovered that Apple intentionally reduced the performance of processors in older iPhone models through software adjustments in the iOS operating system.

The company initially explained that this practice was used to preserve battery life and prevent unexpected device shutdowns. However, iPhone owners in the United States were not satisfied with this explanation and filed a class-action lawsuit.

The dispute lasted until 2020 when Apple agreed to a settlement. The final appeal in this case was concluded last summer, clearing the way for the payout of a total of $500 million in compensation.

This settlement applies to iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and the first generation of iPhone SE. Owners who joined the class-action lawsuit will be entitled to compensation of $92.17 per device.

This compensation payment represents a resolution to the dispute between Apple and owners of older iPhone models. While some believe that this settlement is adequate, others still express dissatisfaction with the deliberate device slowdown.
