Amazon Introduces Q, a New Chatbot for Business Use

Fresh Perspective on AWS’s Latest Innovation

Amazon made an exciting announcement on Tuesday, unveiling their latest chatbot named Q, designed specifically for workplace usage. Presented at the Amazon Web Services Reinvent conference in Las Vegas, this product marks Amazon’s new initiative to compete with Microsoft and Google in software production. While Q’s name might evoke iconic characters like James Bond’s Q or Star Trek’s Q, its origins remain a mystery.

Q is currently available for trial, with some of its features being free of charge. After the trial period ends, the subscription for business users will cost $20 per person per month. The version with additional features for developers and IT professionals will cost $25 per person per month. In comparison, Microsoft 365’s Copilot and Google Workspace’s Duet AI for business users are priced at $30 per person per month.

Initially, Q will assist users in understanding the capabilities of AWS and help them solve problems. Adam Selipski, CEO of AWS, stated at the Reinvent conference that people will be able to communicate with Q through applications such as Salesforce Slack and software editing applications for developers. Q will also be available in the AWS online Management console. Q will provide references to supporting documents for its responses.

Adam Selipski further mentioned that this tool will automatically execute changes in source code to alleviate the workload of developers. Additionally, he highlighted that Q will be integrated with over 40 enterprise systems. This integration will enable discussions on information stored in Microsoft 365, Dropbox, Salesforce, Zendesk, as well as AWS’s data storage service, S3. People will also have the ability to ask questions and make inquiries about documents while conversing with Q.

Steven Dickens, Vice President and Practice Leader at Futurum Group, a technology research firm, wrote that Q would be revolutionary for AWS users who face a myriad of service options that often overlap and intertwine. “AWS has resisted the temptation to create an AI assistant for every service in its portfolio, and I expect Q to be widely accepted in the coming months by both developers and cloud administrators,” Dickens wrote.

Over the years, Amazon has introduced several applications for end-users. These include supply chain management tools, email services, encrypted messaging, video calls, customer support, and marketing communication. However, none of these applications have achieved significant popularity, with most of AWS’s revenue generated from core computing and storage services.
