To address this problem, researchers at the University of Moncton in Canada have developed a groundbreaking deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) tool called ECOGEN, which generates realistic bird sounds to enhance the recognition of rare species.

ECOGEN uses original bird song recordings and converts them into spectrograms, which are visual representations of sound. Based on these spectrograms, the deep learning algorithm generates new artificial intelligence images, creating additional samples for rare species that are underrepresented in the current dataset. These generated bird sounds can be used to train and improve bird song recognition tools used in ecological monitoring.

The research results show that adding artificial bird song samples generated by ECOGEN significantly improves recognition accuracy. On average, accuracy is increased by 12%. These impressive findings were published in the prestigious journal “Methods in Ecology and Evolution.”
