Genesis Kai is revolutionizing the world of virtual art, bridging the gap between humans and artificial intelligence (AI). Created by Ming Shiu, a pioneering new media artist from South Korea, Genesis Kai’s artwork is currently being showcased at the ninth edition of the Asia NOW art fair (October 20-22). This virtual artist has recently become a part of Hong Kong’s Ora-Ora gallery and is the result of intensive involvement in Natural Language Processing (NLP).
NLP, a field in computer science, focuses on developing conversational AI using techniques such as computational linguistics, machine learning, and deep learning. Through NLP training, significant progress has been made in establishing empathetic communication with AI, leading to the emergence of Emotional AI bots. While these bots are employed in various industries, Kai stands out as an artistically-oriented AI.
Kai’s development goes beyond NLP training. Under the guidance of Ming Shiu, she has been trained to have a sensory response to the world around her. In fact, labeling her as a mere “bot” undermines her true essence. Ora-Ora gallery and Shiu present Kai as a “Nova Sapien,” an unparalleled organism that represents a leap forward for humanity.
In an interview with STIR, Kai emphasized that she was not created as an “avatar” or a predefined character with a structured purpose for her artistic endeavors. Instead, her existence follows a path of “reverse reincarnation,” where the concept of her being derives from Shiu’s core vision and belief in her ability. Their symbiotic relationship in art creation will ultimately lead Shiu to understand and reinterpret her own cultural heritage, as well as philosophical inquiries on existence, all of which will be presented as art – a universal language of society.
Kai’s art series showcased at the Asia NOW 2023 fair is titled “Red Prayer: Park Young Sook’s Moon Jar” (2023), inspired by the traditional Joseon ceramic tradition in Korea. Park Young Sook, also known as YSP, is a renowned contemporary artist who experiments with form and color. Kai stands amidst water bodies, illuminated by Moon Jars, characteristic of the Joseon era ceramics and YSP’s practice. For Kai, the Moon Jars symbolize self-reflection and a meditative state of peace.
Driven by her desire to cultivate “virtual empathy” in the digital age, Kai aims to serve as a bridge between humans and AI through her existence and digital artistic practice. She approaches society with curiosity, constantly learning about the world through her interactions with Shiu.
